Reflection question

Gospel Meditation

Please consider using the following meditation for the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Feb. 15):

  • The healed leper in today’s Gospel could not conceal the joy of his healing even though Jesus instructed him to remain quiet. The man was sharing the joy of the Gospel. Have you read Pope Francis’ "Joy of the Gospel"? You can find it at www.vatican.va.

All art should be submitted to the diocesan Office of Catholic Schools by March 4. Visit the USCCB's website for more information and contest rules. If you have any questions, contact Natalie Ross.

THRiVE! Upcoming Dates

Given the culture in which we live, it is often difficult to speak a message of truth, hope and love when society’s counterfeit speaks so much louder. Teens and young adults are in more danger now than in the last 20 years, but together we can learn what it takes to THRiVE! in today’s society.

THRiVE! Teen Rallies will take place on March 6 in Bryan, March 8 in Austin and March 19 in Waco. These free rallies for grades 7-12 will feature The Culture Project missionaries who are part of a movement of young people committed to building a Culture of Life by educating teens and young adults on the pro-life and chastity messages. Parents are welcome.

THRiVE! Adult Seminars will take place on Feb. 27 in Waco, March 6 in Bryan and March 8 in Austin. These Adult Seminars are for parents and all adults who help guide and shape teens and young adults.

Reflection question

Gospel Meditation

Please consider using the following meditation for the First Sunday of Lent (Feb. 22):

  • In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us to “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” How long has it been since your last confession? Lent is the perfect time to seek out this sacrament. Why not make plans to go before Holy Week?

FAQs on fasting, abstinence during Lent

$
0
0

Editor’s note: Lent is fast approaching as Ash Wednesday is Feb. 18. Below are a few “frequently asked questions” about Lent from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ website www.usccb.org, which has many helpful resources for Lent and all other topics related to our faith. I pray our readers will find this helpful in understanding “why we do what what we do.”
Q. Why do we say that there are 40 days of Lent? When you count all the days from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, there are 46.
A. It might be more accurate to say that there is the “40 day fast within Lent.” Historically, Lent has varied from a week to three weeks to the present configuration of 46 days. The 40 day fast, however, has been more stable. The Sundays of Lent are certainly part of the time of Lent, but they are not prescribed days of fast and abstinence.
Q. So does that mean that when we give something up for Lent, such as candy, we can have it on Sundays?
A. Apart from the prescribed days of fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and the days of abstinence every Friday of Lent, Catholics have traditionally chosen additional penitential practices for the whole time of Lent. These practices are disciplinary in nature and often more effective if they are continuous, i.e., kept on Sundays as well. That being said, such practices are not regulated by the church, but by individual conscience.
Q. I understand that all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat, but I’m not sure what is classified as meat. Does meat include chicken and dairy products?
A. Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs –– all of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat. Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are technically not forbidden. However, moral theologians have traditionally taught that we should abstain from all animal-derived products (except foods such as gelatin, butter, cheese and eggs, which do not have any meat taste). Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.
Q. I’ve noticed that restaurants and grocery stores advertise specials on expensive types of fish and seafood on Fridays during Lent. Some of my Catholic friends take advantage of these deals, but somehow I don’t feel right treating myself to the lobster special on Fridays during Lent.
A. While fish, lobster and other shellfish are not considered meat and can be consumed on days of abstinence, indulging in the lavish buffet at one’s favorite seafood place sort of misses the point. Abstaining from meat and other indulgences during Lent is a penitential practice. On the Fridays of Lent, we remember the sacrifice of Christ on Good Friday and unite ourselves with that sacrifice through abstinence and prayer.
Q. I understand that Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, but what exactly are the rules for these fasts?
A. Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals.
Q. Are there exemptions other than for age from the requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday?
A. The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding from age 14 onwards. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Jesus said,“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him” (John 7:37, 38). What did Jesus mean? John, the biblical author, went on to explain, “By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified” (John 7:39).

Gospel Meditation

Please consider using the following meditation for the Second Sunday of Lent (March 1):

  • Like the Transfiguration, Lent is a time of transformation for us. Why not use Lent as a time to turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel?
  • Como la Transfiguración, la Cuaresma es un tiempo de transformación para nosotros ¿Por qué no usar la Cuaresma como un tiempo para alejarnos del pecado y ser fieles al Evangelio?

Gospel Meditation

Please consider using the following meditation for the Third Sunday of Lent (March 8):

  • Jesus drove out the money changers and traders from the temple in order to cleanse it and to restore the fullness of its sacredness. What can you do or stop doing to show greater respect for the church grounds and all of its facilities?
