Blessing of the Home and Household on the Epiphany
Blessing of the Home and Household on the Epiphany
The traditional date of Epiphany is January 6, but in the United States it is celebrated on the Sunday between January 2 and January 8.[1601]
When all have gathered, a suitable song may be sung. The leader makes the sign of the cross, and all reply, "Amen."[1603]
The leader greets those present in the following words:
Let us praise God, who fills our hearts and homes with peace.
Blessed be God forever.
R/.
Blessed be God forever. [1604]
In the following or similar words, the leader prepares those present for the blessing:
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling place among us. It is Christ who enlightens our hearts and homes with his love. May all who enter this home find Christ’s light and love.[1605]
One of those present or the leader reads a text of sacred Scripture, for example:
Listen to the words of the holy Gospel according to Luke: 19:1-9
Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house." And he came down quickly and received him with joy. When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner." But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham."[1610]
The intercessions are then said:
Leader:
The Son of God made his home among us. With thanks and praise let us call upon him.
R/. Stay with us, Lord.
Lord Jesus Christ, with Mary and Joseph you formed the Holy Family: remain in our home, that we may know you as our guest and honor you as our Head. We pray: R/.
Lord Jesus Christ, you had no place to lay your head, but in the spirit of poverty accepted the hospitality of your friends: grant that through our help the homeless may obtain proper housing. We pray: R/.
Lord Jesus Christ, the three kings presented their gifts to you in praise and adoration: grant that those living in this house may use their talents and abilities to your greater glory. We pray: R/.[1611]
After the intercessions the leader invites all present to say the Lord’s Prayer.[1612]
The leader says the prayer of blessing with hands joined:
Lord God of heaven and earth,
you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation
by the guidance of a star.
Bless this house
and all who inhabit it.
Fill them (us) with the light of Christ,
that their (our) concern for others may reflect your love.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
R/. Amen.[1615]
The leader concludes the rite by signing himself or herself with the sign of the cross and saying:
May Christ Jesus dwell with us,
keep us from all harm,
and make us one in mind and heart,
now and forever.
R/. Amen.[1616]
It is preferable to end the celebration with a suitable song, for example, "O Come, All Ye Faithful" or "We Three Kings."—From Book of Blessings

Called to Protect for Youth facilitator training
On Jan. 31, the Ethics and Integrity in Ministry Office will train new facilitators for the Called to Protect for Youth program (the abuse prevention/education program for middle/high school students). The training is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Once trained, the frequency and location of workshops that facilitators choose to do is up to the individual facilitator. Note: Parishes and schools in the Diocese of Austin are required to provide the Called to Protect for Youth program annually for their sixth and ninth graders; students in other middle and high school grades new to the parish/school should also be invited to attend. New program prepares young adults for leadership
By Michele Chan Santos
Senior Correspondent
An innovative new leadership series –– the Emerging Leaders Program –– for young Catholic professionals is making its debut this year.
Based on the leadership program offered by the Austin Young Lawyers Association, and similar to the format followed in Leadership Austin, this six-month program will bring together 30 Catholic professionals for an opening orientation, six monthly lunches, a class project, social events and a full-day closing retreat.
ELP is the brainchild of James Kuhr and Erin Smith, two Catholic attorneys in Austin who attended the Austin Young Lawyers Association leadership program. They saw the need for a similar plan at the Diocese of Austin.
“We wanted to do high-level networking for Catholics,” Kuhr explained. “We want to bring together people who have a direct interest in public service, who are working to incorporate Catholicism into their professional lives. We wanted to have a place where we can come together and talk about the issues and work toward a better Austin.”
Smith added, “People don’t always see Catholic professionals getting involved on a higher level. This is a way to get people involved, to identify leaders.”
Kuhr and Smith approached the diocesan Stewardship and Development Office, where they were then introduced to Alison Tate, the diocesan director of Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministry. Tate was impressed with their enthusiasm and plan.
“I saw a group of motivated young leaders who had already been meeting and showed a serious interest,” Tate said. “They communicated their need to us. We had seen that need. We are not creating ELP just for the sake of a program. It’s an opportunity to reach out to young professionals, a chance to engage young professionals in the life of the church.”
Danielle Madrid, the associate director of Stewardship and Annual Appeal for the diocese, has also been instrumental in launching ELP.
“The program will be a really exciting opportunity to meet Catholic leaders in our community and to network with each other,” Madrid said. “It’s intended to complement the Assembly of Catholic Professionals (ACP).”
Applicants to the program must be under 40 years of age, pursuing professional careers, able to meet the time commitments and attend all mandatory events of the program.
The six monthly lunches will take place at the diocesan Chancery in downtown Austin. Kuhr and Smith have invited speakers including state representatives, a judge, a member of the Board of Regents at the University of Texas, a major business owner, a venture capitalist and a journalist.
Participants will also be invited to a happy hour with young (40 and under) priests in the diocese and a happy hour with the wider membership of the ACP.
“It’s an opportunity for a young professional Catholic to learn about the Diocese and their parishes and ways they can give back and serve the church and the wider community of Austin,” Tate said.
Smith and Kuhr hope Catholics from a wide range of professions –– possibly including business, law, medicine, finance, political, tech and the nonprofit sector –– will apply.
Kuhr emphasized that one does not have to currently be involved in a parish or the diocese to apply.
“We encourage applications for people who are not necessarily heavily involved in the diocese but are interested in community service,” he said.
Applicants do not have to be Catholic, although the program is Catholic in focus, Smith said.
ELP is expected to run on an annual basis, with a different class each year, but Smith and Kuhr are hoping the leadership program will be a springboard to the creation of a wider young professional organization in Austin. To that end, they have talked with leaders at the Young Catholic Professionals chapters in Dallas and Fort Worth and hope that they find the dedicated leadership for either an YCP chapter in Austin or a similar organization that will organically develop from ELP.
“The Diocese of Austin has extended an invitation, and their support, to young professionals of Austin to form a group that makes an impact,” Kuhr said. “By applying you are letting the diocese know that their outreach will not be met with silence.”
Smith said that the relationships participants will make in the program are one of its biggest benefits.
“The people you’ll meet, the friends that you’ll make and the relationships that will form … it’s a way to meet other like-minded people,” Smith said.
The cost of the program is $200. Financial aid is available.
Applications will be available at www.austindiocese.com/ELP beginning Jan. 5 and are due Jan. 31.
For more information, contact James Kuhr at jameskuhr@gmail.com, or Erin Smith at erinelena34@gmail.com.

Sister Barba spreads the joy of religious life

By Peggy Moraczewski
Correspondent
An effervescent Sister Mary Lou Barba recently said, “It is a joyful thing to have a religious life!” She speaks from experience as she prepares to celebrate her 45th anniversary as a religious sister of the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence (MCDP) this year.
Blessed to grow up in a Catholic family, Sister Mary Lou said, “Faith was always relational to me.” Surrounded by family, grandparents and neighbors who felt like family, life was simple. Her father walked three blocks to work at the railroad, her parents did not own a car until she was in high school, the children walked to school and on Christmas Eve, her family walked from home to home in the neighborhood praying the rosary and eating tamales (Las Posadas).
This reflection on early family life links with one of her favorite Pope Francis quotes, “The life of a family is filled with beautiful moments … But if love is missing, joy is missing, nothing is fun. Jesus always gives us that love: he is its endless source.” Sister Mary Lou radiates the love and joy of which Pope Francis speaks.
Currently, Sister Mary Lou works as the Children’s Faith Formation Director at Emmaus Parish in Lakeway; a role that allows her to fulfill part of her religious calling. For her, it is a calling that dates back to first grade when young Mary Louise observed the Sisters of the Incarnate Word in her religious education classes and thought, “I can do that!”
Mary Louise attended public schools in San Antonio, and she faithfully attended religious education classes and was taught by three different orders of religious sisters over the years. The religious sisters had a tremendous impact on her and, a still somewhat mischievous Sister Mary Lou, shared memories of running away to the convent as a sixth grader (quickly returned to her parents by the nuns), and of questioning why her grandmother always prayed to have a priest in the family. Mary Louise wondered, “Why not a nun?”
At Fox Tech High School she studied accounting, participated on the Pep Squad and was vice president of the parish youth group. However, during those busy years, it was the MCDP sisters who left an indelible mark on her heart. They taught her high school religious education classes and offered retreats for students, which were encounters that Mary Louise never wanted to end. She entered the convent following high school graduation and three years later took her first vows, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Her earliest position was as the assistant director of religious education at St. Mary Parish in Lockhart.
Over the years, Sister Mary Lou held multiple positions within the MCDP congregation, including Superior General. She has represented the MCDPs in Rome, Brazil, France and most of the states in the U.S., but says, “My favorite place is the Diocese of Austin.”
In addition to her primary job at Emmaus Parish, since early 2012, she has served as director of the Office for Religious in the Diocese of Austin. This was a position that she had secretly wanted for more than a decade. With a smile on her face, she said, “Here I am!”
Sister Mary Lou holds a bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies with a minor in Philosophy from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio (1977) and a master’s degree in Human Services, Administration and Pastoral Studies from St. Edward’s University in Austin (1990).
Possibly the greatest challenge of her lifetime presented itself when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. She recalls looking at the crucifix on her hospital room wall and thinking, “I am going to tackle this with God’s help. I tried to stay open to God’s grace. It is a daily challenge to be a balanced person, here for God,” she said.
She finds inspiration in her community prayer time and through the Mass. She considers the Eucharist, adoration, the rosary and her religious community her most precious treasures. Reflecting daily on her vows, her love of the Blessed Mother and praying Marian devotions all help her be that “balanced person, here for God.” God is her source of joy, a joy which she shares on a daily basis.
Pope Francis has proclaimed 2015 a Year of Consecrated Life. Bishop Joe Vásquez will celebrate Mass for the World Celebration of Consecrated Life on Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Cathedral in Austin. Sister Mary Lou encourages everyone to attend, to witness and to pray for all religious.

Gospel Meditation
Please consider using the following meditation for the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Feb. 1):
- Today’s Gospel tells us that Jesus taught in the synagogue “as one having authority.” Can you recall a favorite catechism or religious education teacher? Say a prayer for that person and the good things they taught you.
- El Evangelio de hoy nos dice que Jesús enseñó en la sinagoga "como alguien con autoridad."¿ Puede recordar a su catequista o maestro de educación religiosa favorito? Ore por esa persona y las cosas buenas que le enseñó.

Criminal Justice ministry
Volunteers are needed to help staff the Travis State Jail visitor center on Saturdays and Sundays. The role would be one of welcoming and support – greeting family members that have come to visit inmates at the unit, typically their wives and kids. Volunteers will not need to enter the unit, but rather will serve in the visitation facility, which is located just in front of the unit. Volunteers can choose their day and hours of service. Visiting hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is a good way to serve in this ministry without actually having to enter a prison unit. Please contact either Chaplain David Fuller at (512) 926-4482 or John Gilluly at (512) 949-2460 for more information or if you would like to volunteer.

Rev. Daniel E. Garcia appointed auxiliary bishop
AUSTIN – Today we received great news from Holy Father Pope Francis: he has appointed Vicar General Daniel E. Garcia as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Austin. This is the first time in the 67-year history of the Diocese of Austin that an auxiliary bishop has been appointed to serve in the diocese.
An auxiliary bishop assists the bishop in carrying out his duties and responsibilities as the chief shepherd of the diocese.
Bishop Joe S. Vásquez will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. today at the diocesan Pastoral Center in Austin.
Bishop Vásquez appointed then-Father Danny Garcia as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia on March 3, 2014. (The Curia is the collective body of persons and offices assisting the diocesan bishop in governing the diocese.)
Bishop-elect Garcia was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Austin on May 28, 1988, by Bishop John E. McCarthy. He earned a master’s of arts in Liturgical Studies in 2007 from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn.
Bishop-elect Garcia has served in a variety of roles in the Diocese of Austin. His first assignment was as associate pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Austin, followed by Cristo Rey Parish in Austin and St. Louis King of France Parish in Austin. He briefly served at St. Mary Magdalene Parish in Humble in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. In 1995, he was named Founding Pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Austin, leading the parish from its inception through multiple building projects until his appointment as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia in 2014.
Over the years, he has served as Vocation Director and Master of Ceremonies for the Bishop. He has served on various diocesan committees, was a member of the Diocesan Vocation Team, Liturgical Commission, Diaconal Advisory Committee, Presbyteral Council, College of Consultors and Priests’ Personnel Board. Bishop Vasquez' remarks on the appointment of an auxiliary bishop
The following are the prepared remarks of Bishop Joe S. Vásquez on the appointment of Very Rev. Daniel E. Garcia as auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Austin:
It is with great joy that I announce that our Holy Father, Pope Francis, today appointed Father Daniel Garcia as auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Austin. This is a historic moment for our diocese as Bishop-Elect Garcia will be the first auxiliary bishop since its establishment 67 years ago. I am most grateful to His Holiness for the gift of Bishop-Elect Garcia to this local church.
The Catholic Church in Central Texas is experiencing tremendous growth. This appointment is recognition by our Holy Father of the growing needs of the people of this diocese. As auxiliary bishop he will assist me in carrying out my responsibilities, particularly assisting me in shepherding the good people of Central Texas.
Bishop-Elect Garcia is 54 years old and was born in Central Texas in the town of Cameron. He was ordained in 1988 by my predecessor, Bishop Emeritus John McCarthy, and has served in various capacities since his ordination. Since last March he has served as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia. Bishop-Elect Garcia is a fine priest who has faithfully served the Church for 26 years; he is well respected by his brother priests and all those he has served and worked with over the years.
On a personal note, I want to express my deep appreciation to Bishop-Elect Garcia for his dedication and love for the priesthood.
Let us pray for Bishop-Elect Garcia that he continue to be a good and faithful servant. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, may he serve the people of this diocese with a shepherd’s care.
Please join me in congratulating Bishop-Elect Garcia on this most special occasion in his life and the life of this local church.
Bishop-Elect Garcia's remarks upon his appointment as auxiliary bishop
The following are the prepared remarks of Bishop-Elect Daniel E. Garcia on his appointment as auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Austin:
Good morning! Buenos días a todos! I am profoundly humbled, yet honored that our Holy Father, Pope Francis has announced today, January 21, 2015, that he has chosen me to be auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Austin.
I must say, “God is certainly one of surprises!” Just when you think you may know what God wants or thinks, God always has a way of saying, “not so fast!”
I am very appreciative to the many people, family, friends, co-workers, brother priests and parishioners over the years who have walked with me throughout my attempt to say “yes” to God, as imperfect as that may have been. I am very grateful to my family who undoubtedly instilled in me a profound “love of the Lord Jesus Christ, a love for His Church, a love for his mother, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and a love to serve one another.”
For the past 26 years plus, I have tried to give of myself in priestly service to others in the way I understood God calling me to serve. In the midst of these years, I have had wonderful examples of priests and bishops, young and old, living and deceased, who have modeled for me what priestly service is. They, as well as the people I have served, have enabled me to be the priest I am today. A special “Thank you” to my brother priests here in the Diocese of Austin. Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement which you have given me over the years. It is my hope that throughout my years of service in every parish or position I have served, I have somehow brought people to encounter the Lord Jesus Christ in Word, Sacrament and Service.
I am very well aware of how God uses us, amidst our weaknesses and strengths, to build up the Kingdom of God. As I now prepare to be ordained as Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Austin, I sincerely ask all of you to pray for me. I am imperfect, but hopefully with God’s grace, God will continue to use me, now as successor to the Apostles, to build up His Kingdom.
Last, but not least, I “Thank You” Bishop Vásquez for the confidence and opportunity you have given me to work with you in serving the people in the Diocese of Austin. It has been a blessing for me to work with you since my appointment as Vicar General a little over ten months ago.
I look forward to our continued collaboration, as I work to assist you in shepherding this local Church of the Diocese of Austin.
Thank you.
Muchas Gracias.
